Resolving Conflicts with Care and Expertise

The Dispute Resolution Space was established by leading mediator, Belinda Wilson.   Belinda is a Nationally Accredited Mediator, a registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and a Solicitor admitted to the Supreme Court of NSW.   With over 20 years’ experience working in the mediation space, Belinda  has a wealth of experience in assisting parties resolve disputes and manage the emotional impact of conflict.

Belinda holds a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours), a Bachelor of Economics and a Master of Laws (Human Rights and Social Justice).

She has worked for nearly 2 decades at a top-tier law firm, as well as for various charities and not for profit organisations in the areas of family law, family violence and employment/discrimination law.

Belinda has worked as a duty solicitor in a local court, an outreach lawyer in remote aboriginal communities, a Children’s Contact Service Worker, and a Lecturer-at-Law at a leading University.

Belinda’s passion for improving access to justice, and ensuring children’s voices are always heard, led her to set up the organisation's Pro Bono Initiative  “The Child in the Room”.

The Child in the Room

“The Child in the Room” is the  Pro Bono Initiative of The Dispute Resolution Space.

This is why we do what we do.

The Dispute Resolution Space understands that children should be heard on all matters affecting them, a right formalised in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.  Our mediators are passionate about ensuring that children’s views are taken seriously, with weight given to their opinion based on their evolving capacities to understand the issues in dispute.

Our Principal Mediator, Belinda, is both a solicitor and mediator and has over 20 years’ experience working with children.  Belinda completed her Master of Laws,  with a thesis topic exploring the believability of children as witnesses in Court proceedings. Belinda is a Child Consultant, a Children’s Contact Service worker, a foster carer, and a parent of four children.

The Dispute Resolution Space is committed to keeping up to date on all relevant research in this area and providing pro bono advocacy on behalf of children to ensure their voices are heard clearly on all matters that affect them. We are proactive in law reform and have a particular interest in out-of-home care and the Disability Standards for Education. We believe that all family mediations should be conducted as if the children are in the room, even if they are not ever physically present in the process.
